Seen and Unseen Impact of Walmart Stores

Blog, Economy, Ben Eisen has produced a great short video (7:33) discussing the impact of Walmart stores in American communities, as well as the sources of opposition to the development of new stores.

The most important part of the video from a public policy perspective is that it demolishes the idea that Walmart stores selling groceries at very low prices “destroy jobs” in the economy by driving stores that had previously been selling groceries at higher prices out of business. What this line of argument fails to acknowledge is that when consumers save money on groceries, they have more in their pockets to spend on other things, leading to job growth in other parts of the economy.
