Municipal Amalgamation – Not a Good Idea

Given the opportunity, I would support a move back to two councils and a shared services agreement.

A commentary on the issue of municipal amalgamation appears in today’s Free Press.

As a resident of Killarney-Turtle Mountain, I think I can offer insight into “the poster child” of a successful amalgamation.  As the opinion writer indicated, we had all the benefits of amalgamation with the shared services agreement.  What we do not have today in the rural area is the same level of rural council representation or responsiveness.

By the way, I notice that there is one more paid senior staff administrator in the office today.  Why is that position required post amalgamation when the office should have experienced reduced workload?

Given the opportunity, I would support a move back to two councils and a shared services agreement.
