By now, we are used to attending public events that begin with an
acknowledgement that we are on treaty land. This ritual grew out of a claim by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that such a statement was necessary to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians together. But that statement is historically wrong and meant to advance another cause altogether.
