On Oct 27, 2022, Canada’s parliament unanimously, and without debate, passed a motion that equated residential schools with genocide. This added to the eight genocides officially recognized by the Canadian government in June 2021: the Holocaust (Second World War), the Armenian genocide (1915–1917), the Holodomor (1932–1933), the Rwandan genocide (1994), the Srebrenica massacre (1995), the Genocide of Yazidis by ISIL (2014), the Uyghur genocide (2014–present; recognised by Canada in February 2021), and the Rohingya genocide (2016–present).
