STC eliminates three absurdly wasteful routes

The Saskatchewan Transportation Company is far from a hallmark of efficiency. But credit should be given when due, and the minister responsible for STC, Don McMorris, deserves recognition for making the politically difficult decision to eliminate three spectacularly wasteful STC routes. The routes being eliminated are Blaine Lake-North Battleford, Regina-Lanigan, and Eastend-Swift Current/Mossbank. These routes averaged two or less passengers per week over the past several years. These cancellations should come as welcome news to taxpayers, who will save $300,000 annually. However, STC required $10.7 million in subsidies for the 2011 fiscal year, so taxpayers shouldn’t be complacent. Environmentalists should also be happy, since driving nearly empty buses around can hardly be considered environmentally friendly.
