WINNIPEG, MB – The Frontier Centre for Public Policy has just released SGI Ripe for Divestment: A Valuation of Saskatchewan Government Insurance by Ian Madsen, a senior policy analyst with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy. This paper conducts an in depth valuation of the alternative choices for Saskatchewan taxpayers if SGI were divested.
Created in 1944, SGI is a crown corporation that hold a monopoly on auto insurance in Saskatchewan. As it stands, SGI faces no competition, leaving taxpayers with no alternatives to purchase auto insurance. Despite SGI occupying a central role in Saskatchewan, there are several other Canadian companies that could serve taxpayers much better. After all, private investors have demonstrated that they are better at assessing and managing risk than government-controlled crown corporations.
