Far from complimenting government for backing this renovation and preservation movement, I wonder why the FP does not ask the much larger question of why the government is the dominant tenant in downtown Winnipeg. Why is the private sector presence so minor that they do not matter?
While Winnipeg is not as bad as Regina, both cities suffer from way too much government presence and not enough private sector presence.
The long term solution to advancing preservation is to have a vibrant private sector that will move in that direction on its business merits instead of government dictates. For example, imagine how much more demand could be created for downtown office space if Manitoba Hydro was privatized and allowed to pursue acquisitions in the USA like their counterpart Fortis from Newfoundland is able to pursue?
