Before al Qaeda, there were others like the Red Brigade seeking to instill communism in the world and before that Nazis who wanted to impose their version of utopia.
It is not Islam that led to 9-11, it was evil people and they come from all religions and secular society. While it may be out of fashion today to speak about multi-culturalism, it is not a bad alternative to fostering isolated ghettos.
